Originally discovered by Christopher Columbus in 1493 on his second voyage he also named these islands “Las Once Mil Virgenes” or in English 11,000 Virgins in honor of his companion Ursula. These islands became US possessions in 1917 when purchased from Denmark. Things to do in at the city of St. Johns are eco tours, mountain biking rides, and various water activities such as snorkeling and deep sea diving.
